Compare the right systems for your home
A central air conditioner cools through existing ductwork. A heat pump can provide both cooling and heating. Ductless mini-splits can serve individual rooms or spaces without conventional ducts. The best fit depends on your home, existing equipment and comfort priorities.
Look beyond the efficiency label
SEER2 describes cooling efficiency under standardized test conditions. Compare compatible system combinations rather than assuming the outdoor unit alone determines performance. Higher rated efficiency does not guarantee lower bills in every home.
Ask how the proposal accounts for your home’s cooling load, duct condition, airflow, electrical requirements and installation details. Correct sizing matters: choosing the largest available unit is not a substitute for a home assessment.
Consider repair before replacement
If your AC is unreliable, a diagnosis can identify whether a repair is practical. Compare its condition, repair history, compatibility and the replacement proposal rather than relying on age alone.
Ask for a complete proposal
Discuss equipment, removal of the old system, installation requirements, warranty terms and any financing eligibility. Ask which rebates apply to the exact equipment and installation; availability and eligibility can change.
