Start with airflow
Check the furnace filter on the schedule recommended by your equipment manufacturer. Replace a dirty filter with the correct size and type, and keep supply registers and return grilles clear of furniture and rugs. Switch off the equipment before opening a filter compartment.
If rooms remain cold, describe which rooms are affected when you request service. Uneven heating can involve airflow, ductwork or controls; it does not automatically mean you need a new furnace.
Check settings and drafts
Confirm the thermostat is set to heat and that its schedule matches your household. Follow its instructions for battery replacement if applicable. Weatherstripping around doors and appropriate window sealing can reduce drafts without changing your heating equipment.
Know when to stop troubleshooting
Repeated shutdowns, unusual noises or a furnace that will not heat deserve professional diagnosis. Do not repeatedly reset safety controls or attempt gas, electrical or venting repairs yourself.
If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and call emergency services or your gas utility from outside. Do not stay inside to investigate.
Plan heating service
Townsend Mechanical serves Colorado Springs and nearby communities. Call to discuss the symptoms and available scheduling, or book online. A diagnosis can help you compare a repair with replacement based on the system’s actual condition.
